What chemicals in the foods cause food poisoning?
According to research it isn't the chemicals in the foods that cause food poisoning but rather the type of food as it may contain its own natural poison.
Fish: The puffer fish is an example of a poisonous fish. This poison called, ciguatera poison can also be found in many edible Caribbean and Pacific species. A tiny sea parasite produces the poison found in the fish. By consuming this fish, your body may react to food poisoning. Scombroid poison is another poison found in fish containing toxic levels of histamine which can also cause food poisoning. Shellfish: Clams, mussels, and oysters and scallops are likely to be poisoned when certain poisonous dinoflagellates are consumed. Dinoflagellates produce a toxin saxitoxin. Ingesting a poisoned shellfish may result in food poisoning. |
